I wish I had told you, Quintin, this world was never meant for someone as wondrous as you.

My Son, My Hero, My Everything

Quintin Ian Hansen passed away, quietly in his sleep, at the family home in Red House, West Virginia on February 16, 2023. At 24 years old, he was already a Renaissance man. There was nothing he couldn't do, from his brilliant novels, his paintings, his sculptures, and his very complex animatronic costumes that won him numerous first prize awards at Mega-Con, Spooky-Con and local events that included a custom designed guitar autographed by the actor, Richard Dreyfuss. A professional film maker, David Mattox, asked Quintin, if he would appear in his alien costume for a movie he was making on the Alien Movie Franchise, which can be seen at www.youtube.com/watch?v=r74It77DGeY. Quintin appears at the begining and the end.

He was also interviewed and published twice in the Torch news paper for his self-taught magic skills and his amazing costume designs.

There was a driving passion inside of Quintin that shown like a beacon to all that had the privilege to have known him. He was self taught in everything he set his mind to and found in high school and college he spent more time teaching the teachers than anything else. In his motion picture class in college, after seeing part of Quintin's work, the professor said, "Finally, a student with talent."

Quintin was born January 15, 1999, in Orlando, Florida on a bright sunny morning at eight A.M. He must have been in a hurry to start his work as birthing only took one hour. As he grew, there were some issues, Quintin did not start speaking until three years old so I taught him sign. Around three and a half he was found to be deaf in his right ear, but had perfect hearing in his left. This may have been the cause of a moderate stutter. Quintin showed little interest in both reading and writing; however, he had a keen interest in crystals and semi-precious stones. At his first try he carved, into black onyx with his diamond bits, a perfect image of a dragon. It was not until later that he became interested in both reading and writing. By time he was thirteen he was writing reports on Achilles, Patroclus and Odysseus. This sparked his interest in reading all types of books at an amazing rate; such as Moby Dick, 20,000 leagues under the Sea, 2010 odyssey two, Mothman Prophecies, The Hobbit, Parallel Lies, Jonathan Livington Seagull, Annihilation (not the movie), The Celestine Prophecy, Lord of the Rings, Beasts in my Belfry, Childhoods End, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, The Dinosaur Heresies, People of the Deer, The works of Edgar Allan Poe, The Iliad, 2001 A space Odyssey, Dune, Alien: Out of the Shadows and forty two other novels and books. He was in the book store at least once a month scouring the shelves for his next read.

A game my son and I use to play was to indiscriminately pull a novel off the shelf, turn to a random page and begin reading. It was amazing to find all the run-on-sentences, fragments, way too many commas, wrong word usage and just plain poor grammar, commonly making absolutely no sense. We would compare these to see who could find the worst one, this was both a funny and sad activity for a Sunday afternoon. Funny because these books got passed a professional editor before publication and sad as people would buy these books, then tell there friends of the wonderous story.

Although, there were many amusing events during his education in school, one sticks out over all others. Quintin took two years of French, at the end of those two years Quintin could not speak, read or write one word of French, but still he received straight A's. Go figure, our school system at work.

Every spring break while living in Orlando he would visit Gatorland, a theme park, with his mom as I was usually traveling for my job. He loved the long walks through the Florida jungle and viewing the exotic creatures from the area. Twice he went on the Zip- line that carried him over ponds of hungry alligators. Of course he did hit all the other theme parks: Universal, Disney and the associated water parks. Although, he did enjoy going to these venues, he showed little interest in returning due to the extraordinary long lines for a thirty second ride.

Of course the Florida east coast beaches were only forty five minutes away, where we spent many day and weekend trips. Another place he loved was Old Town, Kissimmee, Florida. There were three stores he particularly enjoyed they were called; Old Town General Store, Black Market Minerals and when he was younger Wound 'N Around. Next to Old Town was Fun Spot America that had all types of rides, games and go karts. Another place nearby was Tropical Palms, which Quintin called Palm Trees. We spent many vacations and long weekends there, in the pool or walking over to Old Town and Fun Spot or just hanging out in the cabin watching movies.

During our search for a new home Quintin and I flew to Minneapolis. There we rented a car, drove across Minnesota to South Dakota. It was a long and wonderful drive where we talked about everything, however upon arrival at the house that we found on the web, we quickly realized it was in an area that might be called a demilitarized zone. Fortunately, I planned a four day trip, so we spent the remaining time relaxing in a luxury hotel with excellent room service and watch the complete animated series of Primal and an animated, interactive, horror, video called Bunny. About three months later we sold our Orlando home and moved to our house in West Virginia with a twenty six foot U-Haul that Quintin, pretty much loaded himself from front to back, and a car trailer. After a harrowing trip to West Virginia we unloaded, then Quintin and I flew back to Orlando and loaded a fifteen foot U-Haul and another car trailer. It took an entire day to load the truck then back to the hotel for another relaxing evening of talking and videos. The next day we found that the second car's battery was dead so off to Auto Zone for a fresh battery and we had the car loaded three hours later. With that done I extended our stay for two days just to hang out and of course a trip to Old Town. The drive back to West Virginia was thankfully uneventful.

Although, there are thousands of events that occurred during the time Quintin and I had together, there is one that recently astounded me. There was a movie we wanted to watch so I turned on the TV. The on-light lit up but there was no picture. Quintin and I tried everything to no avail, the next day my wife and I disgust purchasing a new TV.  It wasn’t until the next day that Quintin stepped up to me and said, “I can fix the TV, dad.” I was surprised at first; on the other hand Quintin was always coming up with inventive ideas to do things. I was apprehensive about this, as the last time I opened up a TV was fifty years earlier.  Admittedly Quintin was always right for he always did his research. So we took down the TV, pulled off the back and removed the mother board. I appreciated the fact that all the attaching cables were unique so there would be no crossed wires. The next step was to put the mother board into the oven for fifteen minutes at three hundred fifty degrees. After the allotted time, we allowed the board to cool before installing it into the TV. Replacing the TV back on its stand and without any reservation Quintin pressed the on-button and there was the image, better than ever before. My son the hero, I wish I had told him that more often.

Quintin was a passionate writer. Quite out of the blue he announced he was righting a novel, well a series of novels, 40 to be exact. The first would be called And when the sky ws open. The other 39 would be off chutes or side novels based on his first. This certainly would have been his life's work. I supported the plan and made sure he had everything he needed to be a success. He worked diligently on this epic, offen into the small hours of the morning. On his birthday in 2023 his mother purchased a graphic drawing tablet that he mastered in just under a week. With this tool he designed the front and back cover to his first novel. On the ninth of February he announced the book was completed. A week later Quintin passed away to find whatever awaits him. I take some solace in that I am a published author and this may, in some very small way, have encouraged him to write his master works.

I will miss Quintin terribly for all the days of my life, but I know wherever he is, it will just be another exciting adventure for him.

Quintin, I will never say goodbye to you, but someday I'll say hello.

Take an esoteric thrill ride with a young cynical writer, who hasn't only woken up physically in a world in chaos, but mentally. Finding our place in the world isn't always easy, but what happens when one's no longer bounded by the repetitive narrative of modern societal life. What's next? How does one deal with an existential crisis? A craving for something more? Is there anything else to existence? Could anybody handle the dark, unknown nature of these answers? Yet, this is where Damien's story truly begins. Awakening in complete disarray on the shore of an island after disaster befalls an Australian cruise liner, the veil to a hidden reality uncovers before his eyes. People living in harmony unseen to the modern world and demonstrating physical breaking abilities, is only the precipice of what makes him question reality. It isn't until the introduction to mythological creatures, such as a unicorn and dragons, including one, who seems to know Damien better than anyone, that things are blown out of proportion. Over time with being drip-fed revelations, Damien uncovers, his part to play in helping humanity, the irony of his conflict of existence and the emergence of a brutal dark force, desperately doing anything to keep what's on the island- grounded. Forget the fourth wall I'm breaking the whole set.

A message from Quintin's father. As you have read my son was an amazing talent. Sadly he was taken from us soon after he completed his first novel. The epic he planned would have taken a life time with over forty projected novels. My wife and I are proud of the fact that we played some tiny part in publishing his masterful work.

Below Quintin writes about the series that will never be: Chronicles of Forbidden Knowledge(CFK) is the beginning to this fictional esoteric, genre-busting series, where I'm playing around with spiritual, metaphysical and quantum physical elements, within a multidimensional narrative across multiple characters. And will serve as the anchor for dozens of side series, all connected within the CFK Universe. This will be a 40 book thrill ride, so fasten your seat belts, it's going to be a bumpy ride.
